The Root River and Harmony-Preston Valley State Bike Trail systems offer 60 miles of paved and DNR-maintained trail. These two trail systems pass through eight communities including: Harmony, Preston, Fountain, Lanesboro, Whalan, Peterson, Rushford and Houston.
Root River State Trail:
42 miles o Constructed on an abandoned railroad o Generally level with wheelchair access o Eastern segment between Vinegar Ridge and Houston is more challenging than the western segment as it has a steep, half-mile segment not suitable for all riders o Groomed for cross country skiing in winter
Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail: o 18 miles o Northern two-thirds of this trail is constructed on an abandoned railroad; generally level and wheelchair accessible o Southern segment between Co. Rd. 16 and Harmony was not constructed on old railroad. It is more challenging with climbs out of the river valley with one strenuous incline that may not be suitable for all riders o Groomed for cross country skiing in winter ● Other Resources o Lanesboro is part of the Root River Trail Towns organization. They host regular meetings between the trail towns and host such events as the 60-mile Garage Sale and Taste of the Trail in September.
